So far, we've broken down the shooters, fighting games and sports games that might be right for you this holiday season. (Check out the Holiday issue of STACK magazine, available in your school's gym or weight room, for the print version of our Gift Guide.) Turning now to action-adventure games . . .
Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Out on: XBox 360 and PS3
Ubisoft's latest release in the Assassin's Creed franchise is marked by athletes appearing in ads for the game. You may have spotted Adrian Peterson, B.J. Raji and other top pros. The game itself features a deeper backstory than new players might suspect, with a tale that mixes historical facts with fantasy. Fans of stealth games will like all the sneaking around, and lovers of the Renaissance will appreciate the attention to detail in the environments.
Ask for it if: You used to own a spy kit or you're a history buff.
Batman: Arkham City
Out on: XBox 360, PS3
The biggest surprise of the past few years may have been the success of Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009. It spawned rumors of a sequel and this year's masterpiece, Batman: Arkham City. You use stealth tactics in this game as well, but the draw here is the incredibly-detailed world. For enthusiasts of the original comic, TV show and movies—or any Batman property—this is a crucial holiday pick-up.
Ask for it if: You still have Batman pajamas.
Legend of Zelda: Skyword Sword
Out on: Nintendo Wii
Zelda games hardly need an introduction. Skyword Sword combines the best of traditional Zelda titles with the Wii's motion controls, delivering a consistent art style. Sure, the Wii isn't truly HD, but the watercolor design makes it easy to forget that fact. With intriguing puzzles and smart combat, this is the Zelda game that many expected would launch with the Wii in 2006. Better late than never.
Ask for it if: You still play Ocarina of Time.
