Some athletes don't like the taste of thick, clumpy protein shakes, especially right after intense workouts. But it's not always feasible to grab a full meal in that post-workout window. Thankfully, a new product on the market may make post-workout nutrition a little easier to stomach.

NEXT Proteins has developed XAPP, the world's first carbonated protein drink. Nutritionally, each 16-ounce can contains only 100 calories, with 25 grams of whey protein from whey protein isolate. Choose a caffeinated version (for energy) or a non-caffeinated version (for recovery). Drink the non-caffeinated version after lifting.

Yet, XAPP is not a complete post-workout drink, since it contains only a single gram of carbs. So make sure to combine a suitable carb source with XAPP if you're drinking it within your post-workout window. As for taste, STACK sampled both versions, and they both taste like diet soda or seltzer.

XAPP is very low in sugar, which is great for any athlete watching his or her weight. It also contains vital electrolytes to help you rehydrate after competition. Finally, it is lactose and fat-free, so athletes with allergies should be able to enjoy it.
