There's tough love from a parent, and then there's what Melvin Gordon's mom has been doing to motivate her son for over a year.
Last season, Gordon's rookie year with the San Diego Chargers, Carmen Gordon told the press she wouldn't don her son's No. 28 jersey, because he hadn't yet accomplished anything in the NFL, and she needed to see a little something from Melvin before the jersey came on. Gordon didn't score a touchdown during his rookie season, so Carmen stayed jersey-less.
Gordon finally broke through in the Chargers' 2016 opener, scoring two touchdowns against the Kansas City Chiefs, so it was finally time for Carmen to sport her son's jersey for the first time since he entered the NFL.
Carmen says it's all about continuing to motivate her son. "I'm so proud of Melvin . . . Words can't even express," she told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "It's hard to get here. So many kids dream to get here and don't. Melvin is one of them. He's fortunate, and he doesn't take anything for granted. He appreciates all the fans. He takes that extra minute to sign autographs."
With his mom in the stands wearing his jersey at last, Gordon rushed for over 100 yards and another score against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Looks like Carmen better get comfy in Charger blue.
