Rather, those players were arranged in a wall to defend a free kick, and this photo was snapped as the ball was played from the spot of the penalty over to Maradona.

With any other player on the ball, the photo would likely not have become as iconic. But by focusing on a legendary talent like Maradona, photographer Steve Powell captured the perfect shot.

"It's about communication. It communicates the power of Maradona and the fear he instilled. It's about this one man and the relationship he had with opposing players," Powell told The Guardian of the photo in 2014.
