X-Men: Days of Future Past hasn't even reached theaters yet, and news about a sequel is already trickling out. Director Bryan Singer has announced the release date for X-Men: Apocalypse as May 27, 2016.
It's obviously too soon for info about the cast and plot, but the subtitle warrants some excitement. In the X-Men universe, Apocalypse was the first human mutant. Born 5,000 years ago in Egypt, the immortal villain has the ability to teleport and can manipulate energy, molecules and technology.
Apocalypse could get introduced to the series in a number of ways, including the Age of Apocalypse, Apocalypse Solution and Endgame storylines. Age of Apocalypse would make most sense if Professor Xavier fails to make it out of Days of Future Past alive. In this alternate reality crossover, Apocalypse becomes ruler over Earth, mutants become the dominant race and humans are forced in slavery. This scenario also presents an opportunity to make changes to well-known characters. In the Age of Apocalypse story, Wolverine has one hand, Magneto is a good guy and Cyclops is a one-eyed mutant.
In The Apocalypse Solution, the would-be villain gets re-born, and he's just a young boy when the X-Men encounter him. Of course, none of them have the heart to kill the youngster. This storyline could help lay the groundwork for director Jeff Wadlow's forthcoming X-Force movie by introducing the Horsemen.
If the goal is to introduce Cable, who is reported to play a prominent role in Wadlow's X-Force film, then the studio and director will most likely draw inspiration from Endgame. It also gives the filmmakers leeway to bring back the popular Cyclops and Jean Grey. In Endgame, Cyclops's son gets infected with an incurable disease and time travels to the future to beat the illness. In the future, he becomes Cable. Would Fox want to time travel again given the amount of timeline finagling happening in Days of Future Past?
First Showing reports that the big bad might actually be an existing member of the franchise, and his transformation into the immortal being will happen in an end-credits scene for Days of Future Past. It's all speculation for now, since the studio could opt to pull out of all comic series and concoct a completely new story for X-Men: Apocalypse.
Days of Future Past will premiere on May 23, 2014.
